Mental Game

If you are serious about your game, then you probably appreciate that managing the mental aspects of golf is critical to improving and increasing your performance and enjoyment of the game.

Until now golfers have not had the opportunity to learn about managing the mental aspects of the game, unless they were able to access the services of a sports psychologist or hypnotherapist with an interest in sports performance.

Neil Plimmer and Steve Griffiths are changing this with the OpenMInd Golf Programme.

Steve Griffiths is a hypnotherapist/ psychotherapist whose work involves all aspects of human performance. He runs a very busy hypnotherapy practice based in Hove, East Sussex where he has been based for 6 years. He has written about and presented the application of hypnotherapy on local TV, in the National Press, regional media and has presented at national congresses. As a keen golfer he has a specialist interest in sports hypnosis to improve sports performance, and has worked with many top level sports people to help improve their performance.

Neil and Steve have developed a combined approach and a simple and accessible programme to bring you insight and techniques to improve your game. We all get days when we are at the top of our game, a time when everything just seems to flow. The problem is that most people believe that this optimum performance state is a random occurrence. How does it work? Well, what would it be like if you were able to access that state and understood how to recreate it whenever you wanted to? It wouldn’t guarantee 40 points every round but it would help you feel more in control of your performance and help you cut out the emotional interference which can prevent enjoyment of your game.

They will review the mental factors which produce a great performance, and show you simple techniques to practise, so that you can begin to implement the techniques in your own game and put yourself in control. Then they show that you have a choice over how you respond to your shots, instead of allowing the circumstances of your game to control you.

‘Where the MIND goes, the BALL follows’

This is never truer than in the game of golf, but you will find that the techniques don’t just benefit your golf game. The ability to take more control of your emotional state will be transferable to other areas of your life too.

The Mental Game

Whatever your handicap you probably appreciate that golf, like no other sport is as much a mental challenge as a technical one.

Our attitude and emotional state directly affects our outcomes and yet most golfers think that a good mental approach is merely a matter of chance.

The vast majority of professional golfers undergo some form of mental training in order to create a consistent performance state because they recognise that the mental aspects of the game are incredibly important.

Think about the yips, anger, distraction, rushing, hesitancy, or concentration these are not technical issues but mental ones and taking steps to improve the mental approach will help to improve your overall game.

At OpenMind Golf we recognise that working on the mental aspects of the game is very important if you are serious about your golf.

I am a Hypnotherapist, Sports Psychotherapist and NLP Practitioner. I set up OpenMind Golf with Neil Plimmer and I work with golfers to help them improve their mental approach to their game. We also run introductory and specialist workshops combining mental and technical aspects of the game.

So what sort of issues can I help with? Well I work with you as an individual so the approach is individually designed around your specific needs, but the most common aspects of performance that I get asked to help with includes the following:

Testimonials

"I just thought I'd drop you a quick e-mail to say how interesting and informative I found the workshop. I played on Saturday afternoon and put some of the suggestions into practice. I particularly found the dropping the focus to the pelvis useful. I know that my core stability is a weak area but just with this small change I felt much more stable at address. It's difficult to say whether it improved the swing but I felt more comfortable. Something must have worked as I played the last 4 holes with my partner (male) off the white tees - all IN PAR!!"
S, Hassocks

"Attending an Open Mind session will help you realise that practice on the driving range is only a part of the route to improving your golf. Open Mind will give you an insight in to an equally important part of the game that you need to get right - the mental game. The session was enjoyable and illuminating."
